Latest Craft Project

This is a doll I'm working on for the new baby in the friend-group: Kavenia. I used a black apple template available through the Martha Stewart website.

I still need to whip-stitch her head closed and paint on her face. The painting hasn't been done yet because I'm super nervous about it. :/

O' Tannenbaum!

Before it gets too late, I need to post some pictures of my tree. Alas, I plan to take it down this week even though I feel I didn't get ample time to enjoy it.
I thought my tree turned out very "Dr. Seuss-esque" this year. The topper is just some spray I got from work last year when every thing went 90%. I just tied it together with some ribbon.

Here are some of my favorite ornaments from this year:
This is a fabulous ornament my sister made. It's available on her etsy, which you can reach on her blog: The Petticoat Pirate.
This is one of four huge red bulb ornaments I got for $1.50 at Lowes. Score.
This is probably my favorite Pier 1 ornament this year: my cute little moose.
This is my German pickle ornament. Sadly, I was the only one who could find it. Since I was also the one who put it on the tree I couldn't get a prize. Oh well.

Relaxing Vacation

I'm sorry that my blog has been on vacation lately. I've had so much going on this past month that I don't know where to begin to recover from it. All these events have significantly taken from my blog time, so I offer my apologies.

Christmas was crazy. Since I work in retail that meant very long and strange hours. When the day arrived, Steven was here to celebrate the day with me. As you know, he tends to usurp all of my free-time, especially now that he lives in Northern Virginia. On Sunday night, my friend from London called and said she was in the states. Since I had Monday and Tuesday off from work I hopped in the car and made the 5 hour drive home to see her. I spent most of Monday with her, saw my mother for 30 minutes, slept, saw my best friend and her sister, shopped, hopped back in the car to make the drive back, stopped in Richmond to have dinner with my Dad and then got home at 10pm last night. So I'm exhausted!

I wish that I could dazzle you with news of fabulous New Year plans; however, I'm working today and tomorrow, so no plans.

Anyways, game back on here at Ms. Domestique. Yeehaw.

Holiday Survey

Because Steven has my camera (our friends Eugene and Andrea had a baby 2 days ago and he obviously needed to get pictures for me) I haven't been able to blog about anything I've been planning to blog about since Thanksgiving, e.g. my tree, the new doll I made, my B Moss adventure, and Steven's graduation. So that means that you will be bombarded with all that as soon as he gets in town tomorrow.

Until then, I feel the need to complete this survey:
1. Wrapping paper or gift bags? I love to wrap, however, wrapping does not lend itself to being very environmentally friendly. At least bags are reusable.

2. Real tree or Artificial? Artificial for me. We had real ones growing up and they were too much work. Had to hike out into the woods, chop one down, drag it home, water it, and then watch it shed all over you. So I just keep mine in my closet. That way I get a little tinge of a wish for Christmas every time I see it.

3. When do you put up the tree? Thanksgiving day

4. When do you take the tree down? New Years day

5. Do you like eggnog? Negative

6. Favorite gift received as a child? um...I remember a really cool doll once with black hair. No...I think my favorite was my barbie mini-van complete with car-seat.

7. Hardest person to buy for? Steven

8. Easiest person to buy for? That's probably me. I leave hints regularly.

9. Do you have a nativity scene? no

10. Mail or email Christmas cards? Mail.

11. Worst Christmas gift you ever received? I remember my grandparents on my mother's side getting me something very lame one year, so lame I can't remember it. 2 Christmases ago my parents got me a remote-controlled VW bus. Awesome since I love Volkswagons, but I couldn't do anything with it, so I returned it for the money.

12. Favorite Christmas Movie? National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation

13. When do you start shopping for Christmas? Whenever.

14. Have you ever recycled a Christmas present? Yeah, I probably have.

15. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas? My grandmother's mashed potatoes. They were the best.

16. Colored or Clear Lights? Colored, my tree is a tacky mess and I love it! I really want some bubbling lights. Steven has never heard of them, can you believe it?

17. Favorite Christmas song? O holy night, or Little Saint Nick by the beach boys.

18. Travel at Christmas or stay home? Every year, while my father's parents were in good health, we used to go to their house. It was amazing and I looked forward to it all year. In future I intend to be the house every one goes to. This year it's just me and Steven and I wouldn't have it any other way.

19. Angel on the tree top or a star? Star, I've just got some multi-colored spray on top.

20. Open the presents Christmas Eve or morning? Christmas morning. No one has let me open any at night.

21. Favorite ornament theme or color? non-traditional. I like pinks and teals and greens and silvers

22. White or Warm Christmas? White

23. Favorite Christmas Tradition? Waking up everyone super early after I've been trying to sleep until it's officially Christmas. My kids will get me back for this: hello mom, it's 1 a.m. officially Christmas. That's what I did to my parents, after I had been sitting up in the living room since 12 just looking at my presents. ;)

24. Favorite Christmas Location? Charlotte, N.C.

25. Who do you tag? Anyone

Bummin' Holiday

I came to the realization tonight that I had not sent out all my Holiday cards. I sent out the ones to the parents during Thanksgiving break and I made Steven sign all the other cards. So I've had everything signed, thoughtful notes written, return address stickers adhered, and they've set here waiting to be addressed. The delay was caused by Steven, who has been promising to get the addresses of his friends for like a month.

So my apologies if you get your card late. I'm a bum who was busy trying to graduate in the Spring. However, you were, and are, always in my thoughts.

Lovey Dovey Kiss Kiss

My pining for a tattoo finally culminated in two gorgeous doves on my wrists. I'm in love with them; although, it's hard to get used to having tattoos in such a visible place. I've ordered some extremely cute cuff bracelets to cover them with.

Tomorrow Steven graduates from college. I'm so excited for him! Tonight his amazing family rolled into town. His mother and I altered his robe (it was too small around the waist since robes are based on height not size. We added some side panels. Steven and Pat--his little brother--played with the cats. :D) Tomorrow my parents come into town...and the parental units meet for the first time. I'm very nervous about that and keeping my new tats covered. My Mother is not a fan of bod mods and my Dad was ok until I got more than him. Tomorrow will be interesting to say the least...kill me now, kthx.

My sister asked about my other tats a while ago so I'll catch everyone up on my previous tattoo endeavors.

15 December 2008

I'm aware that I've completely disappeared for the past...oh...week. I'm working through my exams. I only have 2 more to go (Ren Lit, Technical Editing). I'll be done Wednesday, then I can enjoy my break!

Plan Foiled

I've got this huge paper I'm supposed to be working on. Since it is the last paper I'll be writing for a month I'm having tons of trouble concentrating. I can procrastinate like no one you have ever met. In fact, I'm doing it right now. My big plan was to go across the street to Burger King and sit there and write without the distraction of internet and with the luxury of food right there. Well, it turns out they have absolutely no power outlets. The one I found didn't have power running to it. So alas, I'm back on campus. Once I get my quote from Lady Susan I swear up and down that I'm turning off the internet and writing. ALL DAY! I want to get this dumb thing done so that I can stress about my finals. Yay?

Crafty list

Can I seriously be done with classes already? It is getting in the way of my fabulous craft and reading plans for the holidays.

Crati-dos:
  • Finish Steven's stocking complete with beading and pleating. Yes, pleating has made it's way into this project.
  • Sew the finishing touches on the zipper on my pencil-case that I started like 3 months ago.
  • Make polkadotted stuffed trees! I may be becoming a little obsessed with The Black Apple. On her latest blog post she had a fabulous stuffed tree sitting beside her advent calander. I'm not sure if she made it, but I love the idea of it. So I'm going to try my hand at it. Post to follow.
  • Make a doll.

Oh and read Dracula. I realized yesterday that I haven't read it yet. Nothing says Christmas like Gothic literature, right?

Our Cats

I just realized I haven't posted a picture of Penelope. You can see how grumpy she is. These were their mug-shots to turn into the housing agency.

PS- check out the argyle sweater I found for Steven.

Wounded in Battle

Tonight Steven and I had to give Oliver a bath. Because of his long hair, he tends to have...lingering...smells from the litterbox. If I had plants they would die from him walking by. After I washed his body we tried to wash his head and as I held him he freaked out (even though he normally likes water, I think he got it in his eye) and then he ripped into me through my sweater. It's super ouchies. Notice the bruise. I took these pictures right after it happened. Ouchies.

PS- I secretly love being pale.

Big News

After much debate, Steven has decided to accept the job offer in northern Virginia. So that means that I'll be staying in the state for a while. It just makes the most sense for us now so that we can save some money and gain work experience.

I am Marianne Dashwood!

Take the Quiz here!

Every time I take an Austen heroine quiz I get a different character. I guess it all depends on how the wind blows. It is also fitting since I really don't have a favorite. I do have my least favorites. Hands down, I do not like Fanny Price, followed by Emma, and then Catherine Morland. However, those novels have other characters that redeem it for me...except maybe Mansfield Park. I do love the fact that Mrs. Norris in Harry Potter is a tribute to Mrs. Norris in Mansfield. Little trivia fact for you if you're ever on Jeopardy or something.

I spent my Thanksgiving evening watching Persuasion; I can't get enough of that movie. Captain Wentworth's letter gets me every single time.

Anyways, take the Austen quiz (even if you've never read a word of her) and let me know who you got so that I can play at Elizabeth Bennet and judge you and then through self discovery learn that there is more to people than meets the eye.

Snowflakes

The big snowflake is finished and I did a side one free-handed. It's coming together. I have no idea what to put at the top to line it. I need to go hunt around in the fabric store. Faux-fur seems kind of cheesy to put with snowflakes so I'm at a lose.

26 November 2008

Androgyny is A-OK by me.

A blog I follow (Style...A Work In Progress) played around with this interesting website called genderanalyzer.com.

This website apparently uses artificial intelligence (AI) to analyze whether a man or woman is the writer of a particular website. Total pouf of course, but I decided to have a go at it.

What was my result?

86% MALE! HAHA!

Ms. Domestique, confounding AI stereotypes daily and loving it.

Country-lite

I've never been much of a country girl except for a brief fling I had with Garth Brooks in the 2nd grade and a love of the little-known (now) Bobby Gentrie when my dad got me started on records. However, lately I've really been loving Taylor Swift.

Too Much Info?

Maybe, but Steven found this picture online and it sums me up perfectly. Not to mention I thought it was hilarious, so I wanted to pass it along (even if it gives way too much detail into my personal life). I know one or two people who can relate, so maybe you can too.

Happy Holidays...early...

If you had any doubts about how large my 6 month old cat actually is...just know that he fits in a Dog's medium t-shirt designed to fit a pet 13-20 pounds. Yeah...

Surprise in the night

I woke up this morning to snow!

Great Article: Pass it along

This is a really great article about our societies shift from recyclers to wasters.Check it out at thegoodhuman.com Let's not be wasters, eh?

FIRST SNOW!

We have had flurries all morning. It isn't great snow (mostly just a tiny mixed kind), but the snow seems to be starting early this year. Does that mean we will have snow for Christmas morning? Please, oh please! I've got to warm up my vocal chords so that my "snow song" is ready for the big snow.

Snow on campus is one of my favorite things. It makes walking around so enjoyable.

I'm very glad that I went to Burlington Coat Factory while I was in Manassas this weekend and got a new warm coat. It has already come in handy.

Holiday Tradition

Steven and I have developed an interesting tradition.

Last year we bought each other one of the same Christmas presents: Dane Cook's new cd.

This year we did the same thing: National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation...

Yeah, we're that special. ;)

Stocking Skeleton and Cat

So far this is what I've gotten done for Steven's stocking. That snowflake took me forever to cut out! It is actually two overlapping pieces. I have a feeling it's going to take me forever to do the bead-work too. I have all the supplies I need for it so that's a start.
This is my "smile-for-the-camera--Oliver--and-make-Mommie-happy" face. Needless to say, he wasn't impressed.

Soft Claws

My little Oliver had quite a day today.

I have never had a cat who loves to scratch so much. Furniture, mattress, headboard, Steven, everything. He mostly does it when he feels he isn't getting enough attention. A friend at work recommended that I try soft claws because she uses them for her cats. I picked up some at Petsmart today for $5 (normally $21) because the Halloween ones were on sale.

We started off by trimming his nails which he HATES! We have to wrap him in a towel while Steven holds him down and I clip because the sound of the clippers scares him. He's so strong that I can't do it by myself anymore. He raised hell about that and then after that I had to glue these things on him using the same glue humans use for fake nails. That's basically what he has on now, black fake nails.

He cried and himmed and hawed and when we were done I just had to cry. I hate when he gets upset, but he needs to learn to stop attacking Steven and my furniture. So far he seems to be doing really well with them. He can't latch on to anything. They will stay on for 4-8 weeks and then we will have to do this again. I'm going to start doing foot exercises with him.

My poor boy... I got him a new toy today too and gave it to him after the ordeal and he went right to playing. It's a cow-print wrestling toy filled with catnip (he loves to wrestle). I know he won't be mad for long.

08 November 2008

Reaching to the other side.

At work, "L"'s friend "L" came in tonight. She is scheduled to have a C-section next Wednesday because her daughter Maisey is breech...and today...I got to feel Maisey's head!

It totally made my day...perhaps my week...and maybe even my month!

My Stocking!

I finished my stocking and I think it turned out pretty cute. I only end up ruffling the top, but I think it turned out well. I wanted something rustic but cute and I think I got it. Steven's it going to take me a lot of time because I intend to do bead work. Yays.

Leapster: Wall-E

I know I don't have kids but that doesn't stop me from keeping up with the latest toys. Tonight Steven and I were going through the toy section at Target and we stumbled upon the Wall-E game for Leapster.

I love Leapster and I love Wall-E so automatically a great combo, but what made this game so great was the fact that it not only taught kids spelling and numbers but also taught them how to recycle! It had a whole section for sorting recyclables...how awesome is that?

Can I just have a kid already so that I can buy them toys just so that I can play with them?

06 November 2008

I think I could listen to the Beatles all day, every day...

but wait, I already do that. I don't think more than a day has gone by since this summer that I haven't listened to the Beatles... not old yet and they haven't been since my childhood.

03 November 2008

Vote! Vote! Vote!

(Elvgren, my favorite pin-up artist)

Tomorrow is election day and then I promise that I will leave you alone about voting for four years. Get up early and get voting, love doves. I don't want to hear any excuses that you forgot or that something came up. I will tolerate no excuses (:D). That might be a little harsh, but this is important.

I'm expecting a landslide for my candidate (day before the election and I'm finally allowing myself to feel slightly cocky...if he doesn't win I can always move to Europe), so tomorrow will be like Christmas eve where I won't sleep and I'll just have news shows playing constantly on my computer. It's like football for the socially minded. Steven has called the Electoral votes Obama 345, McCain 193. Elections are a fantasy league for peaceniks and dorks...of those two options I am both.

Since I've kept pretty neutral about all this, while really being very passionate about something and following every news-story and watching every debate and every speech since the Democratic primary (and I'm talking first Democratic debate between the like 8 original people running to be the Democratic candidate), please allow me one single remark of pure bias and extreme love: GOBAMA!

The Vagina Monologues (May contain offensive content, just FYI)

I love the Vagina Monologues. Eve Ensler is a personal hero of mine. If you haven't seen them I recommend it. Heck, get the book, perform it yourself, and give all the proceeds to a women's shelter. I've got the book and a video version and I can't get enough of it.

I had my first women's doctor exam today and it made me think of my favorite monologue: The Angry Vagina. When I had the pleasure to see this performed at William and Mary the actor used a British accent. I think it works very well for this piece so that's how I imagine it.

It's extremely vulgar, but if you can get past that, I hope you find things that you can enjoy about it.

oh, and if my vagina could talk it would say: "I am the essence" and it would wear Audrey Hepburn's beatnik outfit from Funny Face.

My Angry Vagina*
(a monologue originally written for Whoopi Goldberg)
(* In performance, this title is normally not read aloud)

My vagina's angry. It is. It's pissed off. My vagina's furious and it needs to talk. It needs to talk about all this shit. It needs to talk to you. I mean what's the deal — an army of people out there thinking up ways to torture my poor-ass, gentle loving vagina. Spending their days constructing psycho products, and nasty ideas to undermine my pussy. Vagina Motherfuckers.

All this shit they're constantly trying to shove up us, clean us up — stuff us up, make it go away. Well, my vagina's not going away. It's pissed off and it's staying right here. Like tampons — what the hell is that? A wad of dry fucking cotton stuffed up there. Why can't they find a way to subtly lubricate the tampon? As soon as my vagina sees it, it goes into shock. It says forget it. It closes up. You need to work with the vagina, introduce it to things, prepare the way. That's what foreplay's all about. You got to convince my vagina, seduce my vagina, engage my vagina's trust. You can't do that with a dry wad of fucking cotton.

Stop shoving things up me. Stop shoving and stop cleaning it up. My vagina doesn't need to be cleaned up. It smells good already. Don't try to decorate. Don't believe him when he tells you it smells like rose petals when it's supposed to smell like pussy. That's what they're doing, trying to clean it up, make it smell like bathroom spray or a garden. All those douche sprays, floral, berry, rain. I don't want my pussy to smell like berries or rain. All cleaned up like washing a fish after you cook it. I want to taste the fish. That's why I ordered it.

Then there's those exams. Who thought them up? There's got to be a better way to do those exams. Why the scary paper dress that scratches your tits and crunches when you lie down so you feel like a wad of paper someone threw away? Why the rubber gloves? Why the flashlight all up there like Nancy Drew working against gravity, why the Nazi steel stirrups, the mean cold duck lips they shove inside you? What's that? My vagina's angry about those visits. It gets defended weeks in advance. It won't go out of the house. Then you get there. Don't you hate that? "Scoot down. Relax your vagina." Why? So you can shove mean cold duck lips inside it. I don't think so.

Why can't they find some nice delicious purple velvet and wrap it around me, lay me down on some feathery cotton spread, put on some nice friendly pink or blue gloves, and rest my feet in some fur covered stirrups? Warm up the duck lips. Work with my vagina.

But no, more tortures — dry wad of fucking cotton, cold duck lips, and thong underwear. That's the worst. Thong underwear. Who thought that up? Moves around all the time, gets stuck in the back of your vagina, real crusty butt.

Vagina's supposed to be loose and wide, not held together. That's why girdles are so bad. We need to move and spread and talk and talk. Vaginas need comfort. Make something like that. Something to give them pleasure. No, of course they won't do that. Hate to see a woman having pleasure, particularly sexual pleasure. I mean make a nice pair of soft cotton underwear with a French tickler built in. Women would be coming all day long, coming in the supermarket, coming on the subway, coming happy vaginas. They wouldn't be able to stand it. Seeing all those energized, not taking shit, hot happy vaginas.

If my vagina could talk it would talk about itself like me, it would talk about other vaginas, it would do vagina impressions.

It would wear Harry Winston diamonds, no clothing, just there all draped in diamonds.

My vagina helped release a giant baby. It thought it would be doing more of that. It's not. Now, it wants to travel, doesn't want a lot of company. It wants to read and know things and get out more. It wants sex. It loves sex. It wants to go deeper. It's hungry for depth. It wants kindness. It wants change. It wants silence and freedom and gentle kisses and warm liquids and deep touch. It wants chocolate and trust and beauty. It wants to scream. It wants to stop being angry. It wants to come. It wants to want. It wants. My vagina, my vagina. Well...It wants everything.
Don't forget that tomorrow is election day!

Is it bad I'll be both sad and happy to get this over with?

02 November 2008

Moving across country is going to be soooooo expensive. I shudder to think about it. I've started looking for rates on moving trucks and they range from $800 with Budget and $1600 with Uhaul. Uhaul automatically gives you 9 days. I only need 4-5, so no thanks Uhaul.

There are just some things I don't want to get rid of, mail, or give away and that I can't fit in my car. Come May there might be a lot of free college furniture up for grabs if any one is interested.

Stocking Hung By the Chimney With Care

My grandmother, and crafting hero, had a tradition where she made everyone in the family a stocking. When she was still well the whole family met up at her house for a huge Christmas celebration. Aunts and uncles and brothers and sisters and cousins that I haven't seen in years used to come. Basically, it was my favorite time of year and my Maw-Maw is the reason I love-love-love the holidays so much.

This year I'm making Steven and myself family stockings to start our own tradition. For mine I've drawn inspiration from a stocking at work that has ruffles on the front. I got some fun quilting fabrics to make my ruffles out of. I think it's going to be pretty precious. I'm going to give Steven some felt and beaded snowflakes I think. His vote was for something from Portal his favorite video game right now. I've vetoed that.

Pumpkin Carving

I ended up doing a silhouette of Jane Austen! I'm such an English dork and I love it!

Long Story and DON'T panic

The other night I was trying on dresses to go with some new boots I got. I threw on one of my old "fat" dresses. It was so...maternity...shall we say.

Steven: That totally doesn't fit you. It's so huge I don't even think it would fit if you were pregnant.
Me: Let's see! (stuffs pillow down her pants)

Instead of running away screaming, my perfect boyfriend grabbed the camera, snapped a shot, and demanded that I blog about it.

I think it suits me, really.

I woke up a few days ago with a desire to have a Buddha ornament. I don't do many things traditionally and that includes my yuletide. I love laughing Buddhas. How can you have a bad day when a fat happy man is grinning at you? If they're cute and inexpensive chances are they will come home with me. Surprisingly, Buddha ornaments do exist but they are expensive. So I decided I should just make one.

He has some bangin' earlobes, huh? A friend of mine just got his ears gauged and I can't help but wonder...will he have Buddha ears when he's 80?

The Winter Slumps

I want to travel so bad lately! Can I get on a plane and fly to some exotic location? I've had London on the brain for a few days. I've been wishing I was back there. I feel pretty boring lately. Nothing has changed much in my life and nothing exciting happens anymore. Tres boring. I've got the beginnings of the winter slumps I think.

I got thinking about the Arctic Monkeys today and I was remembering when I discovered them from their advertisements in the tube stations of London. I've been craving some new music lately. Basically the theme of my life right now is let's spice things up a wee bit, eh? Cause either I've gotten boring or no good media has been created in like the last year. That's a global epidemic then.

That's where you lovely and diverse folks come in. If you would be so kind as to recommend some movies I have to see, some music I have to listen to, and some books I have to read.

I greatly appreciate it. Won't you save my culture-soul?

Sneetches on the Beaches

I really want someone to make a movie about The Sneetches. We've had Horton Hears A Who and The Grinch movies and now I really want The Sneetches turned into a film.

I heart Dr. Seuss so much.

Polkadotted Tree Skirt

I've been on the hunt for a tree skirt after last year when I used a bunched up red tablecloth. It was so Charlie Brown's Christmas. Yesterday I was in Kmart and I came across this beaut! $19.99, Martha Stewart Festive Confections. Pure, polkadotted love.

The whole Festive Confections Collection is adorable with little teacup, bunt cake, Tiffany blue, and candied ornaments. There are also balls that match the skirt so Amanda might be going back to Kmart later for those...
